COMMUNITY GARDEN PROJECT
COMMUNITY GARDEN PROJECT
Sachem Public Library’s Community Garden Project
Continuing the library’s support of new and innovative educational endeavors and our popular green space initiatives, we have completed construction of our new Community Garden Project. This project has transformed an underutilized area of our Inside/Out outdoor space into flower, herb, and vegetable gardens. In that same space we’ve also created an outdoor classroom and meeting space.
The new planting spaces are a collaborative environment for patrons of all ages to participate in gardening, food growing, stewardship, and many other green space initiatives. The outdoor classroom offers a welcoming seating and meeting area for patrons and provides the library with additional space for library events, classes, and outdoor meetings.
The landscape has been converted into a safe, educational, and ADA compliant space that addressed ongoing drainage issues. Some plants and vegetation were transferred to other areas on the property, and unhealthy trees were removed.
The library strives to offer our patrons educational experiences of many kinds. Our goal with the Community Garden is to spark an interest in gardening and garden stewardship and bring educational experiences to our community they may otherwise not have access to.
